Club President Ian Somerville gave an entertaining and interesting Address of 200 slides entitled “Hebridean Panorama” last night at the first Club meeting of 2009.
As Ian was giving the presentation Vice-President Iain Quinn chaired the meeting.
Like many other shipping enthusiasts Ian’s interest in ships began through family holidays. Ian went on holiday, with his family, to the island of Mull during the late 1960s.
Ian opened the evening with slides of COLUMBA, which was on the Oban-Craignure run at that time. In the following years the vessel also served Coll, Tiree, Colonsay and performed the Sacred Isle cruise to Iona on many an occasion. One of her more unusual call was at Bruichladdich on Islay.
IONA was another ferry with which Ian became well acquainted. He continued the evening with slides of LOCH SEAFORTH, ARRAN, CLAYMORE (1955 and 1978), CALEDONIA, GLEN SANNOX, HEBRIDES, SUILVEN, CLANSMAN (1964), ISLE OF ARRAN, LORD OF THE ISLES, ISLE OF MULL and, of course, KING GEORGE V.
Ian’s appetite for the West Highlands became more apparent as he showed slides, not only of the ferries, which served the Islands, but also of Highland landscapes and gardens.
Before retirement Ian worked for the Parks Department at, what was then called, Glasgow Corporation. His interest in gardens has remained ever since. This was evident in the slides of Achamore House on Gigha where a significant collection of rhododendrons can be found. Ian also took us on a visit to Torosay Castle near Craignure.
In addition to showing slides of ferries at piers and linkspans, Ian treated us to slides of the approaches to the islands with the piers in the near distance.
Another of Ian’s interests is bird watching. Many is the time the writer has stood beside him as he scans the cliffs of Scarba with his binoculars from a well known paddle steamer.
His favourite bird is the puffin, very common on Staffa. It may be difficult to photograph birds in flight, but Ian has taken a good stab at it!
Railways have always figured in Ian’s life particularly the West Highland Lines from Glasgow to Oban, Fort William and Mallaig. He is an active member of the Friends of the West Highland Lines.
The railways were represented with slides of Mallaig Station as it used to be during the 1960s and of the Banavie Swing Bridge with Ben Nevis in the background.
As the title suggested tonight’s talk was about the Hebridean Islands, but it was much more than that. Eric Schofield, in his Vote of Thanks, correctly said that Ian took us on a journey from the past through to the present day while reminding us what a beautiful part of the world we live in.
Iain Quinn gave a run down of recent shipping movements and overhauls. He had a few other points of special interest.
HEBRIDEAN PRINCESS is approaching her 20th Anniversary in her role as a cruise ship. She will be berthed in Glasgow for the weekend of Friday 20th February to Sunday 2nd. This is the weekend of the Model Railway Exhibition at the SECC in Glasgow, an event attended by shipping and railway enthusiasts alike.
This will be an ideal opportunity to photograph the vessel while she is in Glasgow.
On Sunday she will sail to Fairlie from where she will sail for the first cruise of the 2009 season.
CLAYMORE’s Fast Rescue Craft has been transferred to the new Pentland Firth vessel PENTALINA. Her passenger certificate has been reduced to twelve as a result. This would appear to be a pointless exercise as there is now no back up vessel should the new Fast Craft be taken out of service.
PENTALINA B (ex IONA) has already been limited to twelve passengers for a considerable period of time.
CLANSMAN called in at Castlebay to drop off a gangway while en route from the Clyde to Stornoway.
The Stornoway freight vessel MUIRNEAG arrived back from overhaul on the Tyne looking resplendent in full Caledonian MacBrayne livery.
The next Club meeting is on Friday 27th February when Iain Quinn will be the speaker. Iain will be talking about “West Highland Piers”.
All meetings are held in The Kirk Lounge, Renfield St Stephens Church Hall, Bath Street, Glasgow commencing at 19.30. Non-members welcome.
Duncan Wilson.

The sailing to Colonsay was abandoned yesterday.  ISLE OF MULL did an about turn and headed back to Oban as the weather conditions were against her. There will be another attempt today at 14.00.
Services between Fionnphort and Iona were cancelled for the rest of the day at 15.09.
The 18.00 sailing from Kennacraig to Port Ellen was cancelled. As a result the 07.00 this morning was also cancelled.

The timings were as follows: Depart Oban 09.00, arrive Tiree 12.40, depart Tiree 12.55, arrive Coll 13.55, depart Coll 14.00, arrive Craignure 16.45, depart Craignure 17.00, arrive back at Oban 17.45. The 17.00 sailing from Craignure was for passengers only. Sounds like a good day out for a shipping enthusiast.
The 16.00 service from Oban to Craignure departed at 18.00. Arrival time back in Oban was 19.46.

ISLE OF LEWIS arrived at Fredericia, Denmark at 21.30 last night for her overhaul.
Her engines will be converted to burn Heavy Fuel Oil, which is cheaper, during this time. Apparently the Garvel dry-dock in Greenock quoted four weeks to do the job, while the Danish shipyard quoted twelve days.
HEBRIDES was converted at Greenock in 2007. CLANSMAN was converted at Birkenhead a year later.

Sailings on the Ullapool-Stornoway route were on an “as and when” basis and the overnight freight service was cancelled.
All sailings on the Caledonian MacBrayne network, with the exception of the Iona route, appear to be running as per timetable tonight. The service between Fionnphort and Iona is running to an amended timetable due to the ongoing work on the Iona Slipway.

The Caledonian MacBrayne ferry LOCH STRIVEN, which operates between Sconser and Raasay, was called out in the early hours of Sunday 18th to transport fire appliances from Broadford and Portree to the island.
Emergency services were called to a blaze at the historic Raasay House, which dates from the eighteenth century. The fire was discovered at 01.15.
Raasay House has been run as an activity centre for twenty-five years.  The building was due to re-open in April, following major renovations costing £4 million. Now the A-listed building has been all but destroyed by the fire.
The house is owned by The Raasay House Community Company who bought it from the previous owners Highlands and Islands Enterprise.
The house was a great draw for tourists and its Dolphin Café was very popular with locals and tourists alike.
The island community have vowed to start again and rebuild the house. Nevertheless the loss of Raasay House is a devastating blow to the island’s economy.

LORD OF THE ISLES could have been forgiven if she felt a bit confused on Saturday 3rd. Having spent Friday night at the Number 1 Berth, Oban she had an early rise to allow ISLE OF MULL in to the berth at 07.20. After spending the morning at Number 2 Berth she crossed over to Craignure to allow both ISLE OF MULL and CLANSMAN in, occupying both berths.
The South Berth at Craignure was unavailable as it was occupied by the HM Customs vessel SEEKER.
LORD OF THE ISLES, therefore, had to make way for ISLE OF MULL again at 16.30.
LOCH RANZA moved from the wires at Gourock on Sunday 4th to Ardmaleish for her overhaul. There was no room for her at Rothesay as LOCH ALAINN occupied the Inner Berth. Although LOCH ALAINN is also waiting for her overhaul she spent a brief spell on the Colintraive-Rhubodach run covering for LOCH DUNVEGAN, which suffered from a minor ailment.
LOCH BUIE departed from Roseneath on Wednesday 7th en route for Campbeltown where she spent the night. Next day she made it as far as Port Askaig.
On Friday LOCH BUIE arrived back at Iona where LOCH RIDDON had kept things ticking over during the repairs to the slipway at Iona. Repair work is still to be completed.
LOCH RIDDON vacated the Fionnphort-Iona service and sailed to Tobermory where she spent Friday night. She eventually sailed to Oban to relieve EIGG on the Lismore service as the rostered vessel was suffering from technical problems.
ISLE OF CUMBRAE, also laid up at Roseneath, sailed to Gourock on Monday 12th.
She has made her way up to Oban possibly to take over from LOCH RIDDON. She, in turn, could relieve RAASAY, which is on the Tobermory-Kilchoan run.
RAASAY is normally the spare small vessel based at Oban.
LOCH FYNE has been plying across the Sound of Mull between Fishnish and Lochaline.
LOCHNEVIS seems to be keeping a low profile these days covering the Mallaig-Small Isles-Armadale winter service.
CORUISK is laid up in the King George V Dock in Glasgow.
LOCH TARBERT has encountered occasional weather disruptions on the Tarbert-Portavadie-Lochranza winter service.
LOCH BHRUSDA, LOCH PORTAIN and LOCH STRIVEN are maintaining the Ardmhor-Eriskay, Berneray-Leverburgh and Sconser-Raasay services respectively.
LOCH LINNHE is covering for LOCH RANZA on the Tayinloan-Gigha route, although she is sailing to Kennacraig for the foreseeable future due to the weed infestation at Tayinloan.
HEBRIDEAN ISLES and ISLE OF ARRAN continue to maintain the two-ship service from Kennacraig to Port Askaig and Port Ellen.
ISLE OF MULL provides sterling service to the people of Mull and Colonsay.
LORD OF THE ISLES is squaring up to the elements on the Oban-Coll-Tiree-Barra and South Uist routes.
HEBRIDES has quietly been getting on with business on the Uig-Tarbert-Lochmaddy routes.
ISLE OF LEWIS and MUIRNEAG continue to ply their trade across the Minch between Ullapool and Stornoway.
CALEDONIAN ISLES remains in dry-dock at Greenock. CLANSMAN on the Brodick run has diverted to Gourock a few times during her stint on the Clyde for weather related reasons.

The high winds returned to the Western Isles again on Thursday 15th disrupting the ferry network as they swept over the country.
LORD OF THE ISLES was unable to berth at Coll and returned to Oban.
The 15.30 Outer Isles service from Oban was cancelled.
LORD OF THE ISLES sailed to Barra only at 06.00 on Friday calling at Coll and Tiree on the way. Arrival time at Castlebay was about 13.00.She then departed at 13.45 and returned to Oban calling at Tiree en route. The vessel arrived back in Oban at 20.50.
All sailings between Ardmhor and Eriskay (LOCH BHRUSDA), Fionnphort and Iona (LOCH BUIE), Leverburgh and Berneray (LOCH PORTAIN), Sconser and Raasay (LOCH STRIVEN), Uig and Tarbert (HEBRIDES), Ullapool and Stornoway (ISLE OF LEWIS) including the freight service (MUIRNEAG) were cancelled.
The 18.00 sailing from Kennacraig to Port Ellen (HEBRIDEAN ISLES/ISLE OF ARRAN) was diverted to Port Askaig.
Caledonian MacBrayne advised their customers that the 07.00 sailing from Kennacraig to Port Ellen on Saturday 17th would be cancelled for operational reasons.
ISLE OF MULL failed to reach Colonsay on Friday’s 10.00 sailing. She did an about turn and sailed back to Oban.
There was a brief respite from the weather on Saturday morning. However by nightfall winds reaching eighty mph had returned.
CalMac were advising their customers that Sunday services from Oban to Coll, Tiree, Barra and South Uist might be subjected to disruptions.
The 16.00 and 21.45 sailings from Oban to Craignure and the 17.00 ex Craignure were cancelled. CalMac also advised that the 09.00 ex Craignure this morning might be cancelled.
On Saturday the 15.30 sailing from Port Askaig to Kennacraig and the 18.00 return to Port Ellen were cancelled. Today’s 09.45 sailing therefore left Port Askaig instead of Port Ellen.
The weather ruled out the service across the Sound of Barra and caused the cancellations of the 14.30 ex Stornoway and the 18.15 ex Ullapool.
HEBRIDEAN ISLES had to go to Oban for repairs on Saturday so she picked up the stranded traffic at Colonsay, where she arrived at 08.20, on the way. She is expected to sail back to Colonsay today at 10.30.
LORD OF THE ISLES managed to berth at Tiree today but only unloaded a limited number of passengers and vehicles before she had to leave as the weather conditions made life very difficult indeed. She missed out her call at Coll and returned straight to Oban. The next sailing to Coll and Tiree will be on Tuesday 20th as per timetable, weather permitting.
The 15.00 sailing to Barra and South Uist was also cancelled today. The next sailing will also be on Tuesday, weather permitting.
The 18.00 sailing from Kennacraig has been diverted to Port Askaig.
All sailings across the Sound of Barra and between Oban and Lismore (LOCH RIDDON) have been cancelled today.
Weeds are causing problems at Tayinloan again. The service to Gigha(LOCH LINNHE) will be operating to Kennacraig from tomorrow  until further notice. An ammended timetable has been put in place, which  will be as follows: Depart Gigha 08.00 and 13.00. Depart Kennacraig 10.00 and 14.45. Bookings are essential on this service as passenger numbers are restricted to 12. Please phone the Kennacraig Office on 01880 730253 and take option 2.
The service between Fionnphort and Iona was suspended for the remainder of the day at13.22 due to the weather. With the ongoing essential repair work to the Iona slipway, the service will be operating a restricted timetable until further notice. Sailings are as follows: Monday-Saturday depart Fionnphort 08.45,12.15,14.45 and 18.00. Depart Iona 09.00, 12.30,15.00 and 18.15.

A new charging system for fishing vessels, sailing boats and other craft berthing at Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) piers and harbours around the West Highlands starts on Wednesday 1st April.
The aim is to make the prices fairer and more comparable with other port authorities and consistent across its twenty-one piers and harbours.
In many cases charges will come down but there will be a more consistent application than previously experienced thanks to a simplified structure.
At the moment berthing charges based on gross registered tonnage (GRT) are 34p per tonne but from April 1st this will be reduced to 30p to bring it in line with other port authorities.
Traffic dues for passengers and cars will increase to allow only for inflation and commercial vehicles will see a reduction from £2.62 per meter to 95p per meter with livestock charged at 69p per head.
Fishing boats have not had the option of being charged a composite fee for berthing and landing dues in the current system but after 1st April, will be able to pay a composite fee and an annual composite or berthing fee.
Previously a boat no longer than ten meters, which includes the majority of fishing vessels in the West Highlands, had to pay a berthing fee of £19.65 plus eight % of the value of the catch as a landing fee for each call.
From April there will be the opportunity to pay a composite of £22.00 for each berth or an annual fee of £456.00 or berthing only fees of £13.50 for each call or £116.00 annually.
Many vessels including pleasure craft may find they will be charged at piers and hartbours where they previously were not. The review of fees and dues at the piers and harbours owned by CMAL, which resulted in the changes, compared CMAL’s pricing structure with those of other port authorities.
It also found that there were occasions and locations where charges were not consistently applied leading to “an overall fuzzy application of published charges”.
This was put down to unmanned locations, difficulties in calculating charges, custom and practice and the low sums of money involved for infrequent small vessels.
CMAL piers and harbours include those at Armadale, Castlebay, Coll, Colonsay, Fishnish, Kennacraig, Kilchoan, Lochaline, Lochboisdale, Oban, Port Ellen Tiree and Tobermory.

Ferry company Caledonian MacBrayne will use different oil on three of its
ferries to make fuel efficiency savings it was asked to achieve for its
tender for the Hebridean services.
A spokesman for the company confirmed this yesterday as he scotched reports
that the new oil was so thick it would take 50 minutes to refuel the ferry
ISLE OF LEWIS at Ullapool.
Spokesman David Cannon said: “We have not been forced to change fuel due to
the credit crunch although clearly it is financially prudent to seek savings
wherever possible.
“In this case the Clyde and Hebrides Ferry Services tender asked us to
identify efficiency savings and the bid was made on the basis of three
vessels including ISLE OF LEWIS being changed to Intermediate Fuel
Oil (IFO). ISLE OF LEWIS will be converted to IFO during its annual
overhaul at the end of the month
“We are not changing to heavy oil. IFO is not less environmentally friendly
as it has as higher calorific value so we will burn less and it is actually
beneficial to our carbon footprint.”
Regarding the increased re-fuelling time he added: “The timetable changes
are partly due to the increased fuelling time but it's only about 10 minutes
more than before.
Also the ship will now be fuelled at Ullapool so some minor timetable
changes were required to accommodate this.
“We have also added extra time for loading and unloading in anticipation of
additional traffic being generated from the introduction of the Road Equivalent Tariff pilot scheme.”
