LOCH PORTAIN.
On Sunday 1st March a low tide caused the cancellation of the 1330/1440 round trip to Leverburgh.
Another weekday timetable was introduced on Monday 2nd March. While continuing to leave from Berneray at 0725 and 1110, the last sailing of the day was put back from1430 until 1530.
However she operated as such for one day only and handed the service over to LOCH BHRUSDA from the first sailing the next day. She then left her overnight berth at Otternish and headed for the Sound of Mull where she briefly called at Lochaline then carried on to Oban for a berth. After a day there, she continued on her way at 0700 on Thursday 5th and reached Campbeltown that evening. Finally, on Friday 6th, she sailed up the Clyde to Largs to offload crew cars and then to the James Watt Dock where she arrived at 1245 to begin her annual overhaul. She remained in the wet dock until Sunday 15th when she moved into the Garvel Drydock around 1230 in the company of HEBRIDES, the smaller vessel berthing at the head of the dock.
She was refloated on Tuesday 24thand sailed direct to Gourock where she berthed until Friday 27th. At 0700 that morning she returned to Largs to pick up cars then set off for Campbeltown; however, she encountered heavy weather off the south end of Bute which forced her to turn around. She made for Millport where she berthed at the Old Pier to await an improvement in the conditions. This was not forthcoming and she eventually sailed back up river to berth at Gourock. She tried again next day and this time did make it as far as Campbeltown. Next day, Sunday 29th, she rounded the Mull of Kintyre and made for Craignure where she berthed overnight and continued on to Berneray next morning. Arriving in the late afternoon she changed places with LOCH BHRUSDA and re-entered service with the 1720 round trip to Leverburgh.
By this time the Summer timetable had been introduced and this presented her with a simpler life in that the number of timetables operated had been reduced to two while the sailings were the same on each weekday. For the main Summer period she sailed four times per day, Mondays to Saturdays, leaving Berneray at 0715, 1030, 1330 and 1720.Two sailings operated on Sundays, leaving Berneray at 0830 and 1615.
The inevitable tidal situations caused problems, beginning in April when she missed the 1030 sailing from Berneray and 1135 return from Leverburgh on Tuesday 7th, Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th. In addition, on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th she dropped the 1330/1445 round trip and replaced them both with a sailing from Berneray at 0935 and Leverburgh at 1045. On Friday 10th and Saturday 11th she missed the 1330/1445 sailing. On Friday 24th and Saturday 25th she missed the 1135 sailing from Leverburgh and the 1330 from Berneray. The 1330/1445 sailing was also cancelled on Monday 27th; this time however the reason was technical problems.
Because of weather problems the first sailing of the day at 0715 was omitted on Friday 1st and Thursday 7th May. Tidal problems on Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th caused the cancellation of the 1330/1445 round trip from Berneray. On the former date it was replaced by a sailing from Berneray at 1500 and a return from Leverburgh at 1600. From Sunday 17th an additional sailing was provided on the Sabbath, leaving Berneray at 1300 and retuning from Leverburgh at 1410. However, on Sunday 24th, a low tide led to its cancellation and replacement with a crossing from Berneray at 1400 and Leverburgh at 1505.
Because of fog on the morning of Tuesday 2nd June she was unable to land at Leverburgh at 0815 and had to lie off. Upon its lifting she managed to get alongside and returned to her roster with the 1135 sailing to Berneray. Because of a low tide the 1445 sailing from Leverburgh was delayed in leaving on Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th until 1540 and 1600 respectively.
Low tides affected her again in July when she missed the 1330/1445 round trip from Berneray on Thursday 23rd, Friday 24th and Saturday 25th. In August the same sailing was missed between Thursday 20th and Monday 24th inclusive. On Sunday 23rd it was replaced by an additional crossing from Berneray at 1030 and Leverburgh at 1140. |
