LOCH NEVIS.
Because of bad weather on Monday 13th March LOCH NEVIS omitted her call at Muck, an action repeated on Wednesday 29th.
Summer began on Friday 31st March and showed some minor retimings on sailings to Eigg and Muck. On Tuesdays her departure from Eigg was put back by 5 minutes until 1300 and that from Muck by 10 minutes until 1350. She now arrived at Mallaig at 1530 instead of 1455. Similarly, on Thursdays, she left Muck at 1235 instead of 1230 and Eigg at 1325 instead of 1315. Arrival back at Mallaig was changed to 1440 instead of 1430.The morning sailing on Fridays now left Mallaig at 0825 and called at Muck at 1020 and Eigg at 1110 and returned to base for 1225. On Saturdays the Muck departures were changed to 1200 and 1550 instead of 1205 and 1555 respectively.
On Tuesday 4th April she developed technical problems but finished her normal day’s sailings. However, next day, she was out of service at Mallaig undergoing repairs. Bruce Watt’s LOCHAN was chartered for the day to cover for her. LOCH NEVIS resumed her sailings on Thursday 6th but included a call at Rum: thus she sailed from Mallaig at the normal time of 1015 then called at Rum at 1135, Muck 1250 and Eigg at 1315 before returning to Mallaig for 1440.
Because of bad weather she omitted the Muck call on Thursday 13th and Saturday 22nd, the p.m. Eigg call on Monday 24th and the second Muck call on Tuesday 25th. On Tuesday 2nd May she again missed the Muck call.
Her Mallaig consort CORUISK broke down on Monday 29th May and had to be withdrawn from service at 1321 to undergo repairs. To cover for her LOCH NEVIS sailed from Mallaig that evening at 1800, returning from Armadale at 1840 on a limited vehicle service. On Tuesday 30th she took the first sailing of the day at 0810 before going to the Small Isles, then took the 1615 and 1800 crossings to Skye. A similar situation pertained the next day, the only difference being in the evening when she crossed at 1800 only. On Thursday 1st June she repeated the service of Tuesday 30th. Next day, Friday 2nd, she provided the morning crossing only. This proved to be the last day of her being the Skye ferry as CORUISK returned to service at 1255. On her Armadale sailings only cars were carried because of her limited capacity.
Bad weather on Tuesday 20th June led to the cancellation of the second Muck call. The gales continued next day but began to abate as the day progressed. Originally stormbound in the morning, she was able to leave Mallaig at 1500 and sailed to Rum for 1630 and arrived at Canna at 1730. After an hour at the island pier she got underway again at 1830 and reached Mallaig at 2100. On this sailing she carried the mortal remains of Dr. John Lorne Campbell, former owner of Canna and renowned Gaelic scholar. She remained at Canna long enough for the burial party to go ashore to inter the remains and hold a burial service. Many of the party expressed their admiration of Captain and crew for actually getting to the island in the circumstances. Because of fog on Friday 21st June she omitted her call at Muck.
