LOCH LINNHE.

On Wednesday 12th September fog caused the cancellation of the 1100 sailing from Tobermory with 1145 return from Kilchoan. On Friday 28th she missed the 1300/1345 round trip, this time because of a low tide.
She temporarily forsook the sylvan pleasures of Tobermory on Sunday 14th October and instead headed for the livelier prospect of Fishnish to provide some relief sailings to and from Lochaline to assist LOCH FYNE in dealing with Mull Rally traffic. She sailed from Fishnish at 1105, 1150, 1230, 1315 and 1410 and returned from Lochaline at 1130, 1210, 1255 and 1345. After the 1410 crossing she sailed light from Lochaline back to Tobermory.
The normal Winter Kilchoan service was introduced on Sunday 21st October.
She duly handed over the Kilchoan service to her Winter substitute RAASAY on the afternoon of Thursday 1st November and left Tobermory at 1600 to make the short journey to Craignure. On Friday 2nd she left early and called at Oban for fuel before setting out for the Clyde, reaching Campbeltown at 1800. On Saturday 3rd she sailed firstly to Rhubodach to unload crew cars at 1400 and then on to Largs which she reached at 1600. Finally, on Sunday 4th, she retraced her steps and was slipped at Ardmaleish for her annual overhaul.
She returned to her natural element on Thursday 15th and carried out trials before proceeding to Rothesay where she arrived at 1625. Next day she returned north, leaving Rothesay at 1430. She briefly called at Colintraive to pick up crew cars then carried on to Campbeltown, arriving at 2100. She left at 0700 next morning and rounded the Mull heading for Oban where the night was spent. At this time LOCH BHRUSDA on the Sound of Eriskay had developed technical problems that required her to be withdrawn from service. To facilitate this LOCH LINNHE was despatched to temporarily replace her. Accordingly, she left Oban on Sunday 18th bound for Ard Mhor. However the conditions intervened and she was forced to turn back, berthing at Lochaline at 1700. She tried again next day, leaving at 0700, and this time she was able to sail out to Barra, arriving at Ard Mhor at 1500.
She duly took up the service to Eriskay at 0715 on Wednesday 21st and sailed without incident until Saturday 24th when the weather forced her to miss the 1710 round trip across the Sound. She remained on the service until LOCH BHRUSDA returned from the Clyde on Friday 30th and replaced her after 1450 arrival at Ard Mhor. After a crew change, LOCH LINNHE left Ard Mhor to sail most unusually to Canna where she tied up for the night at 1930. Her journey north continued on Saturday 1st December when she left Canna to sail over to Mallaig and she left there next morning at 0700 bound for Raasay where she arrived at 1100. There she freed LOCH STRIVEN for annual overhaul and took up the service with the 1600 sailing to Sconser.
On Saturdays 8th and 15th December she was rostered to provide an additional crossing from Raasay at 1900, returning from Sconser at 1930. On the latter date she also provided some extra sailings to cope with demand. Bad weather struck on Thursday 13th causing her to miss the 0800 sailing from Raasay and its return at 0830. She was also forced by the conditions to drop the 1000 and 1510 round trips to Sconser. Next day she missed the 0900 round trip from Raasay.
After Christmas Day off at Raasay she had an easy time of it on Wednesday 26th, only being rostered for one crossing from Raasay at 1000 returning from Sconser 30 minutes later. She provided the normal timetable on Thursday 27th but this proved to be her last full day on the service as LOCH STRIVEN returned from the Clyde that morning. She handed over the route to the regular vessel at 0950 then left 10 minutes later for Tobermory where she berthed at 2000. That was as far as she got however as LOCH STRIVEN promptly broke down later in the day. Thus, on Saturday 29th, she retraced her steps, leaving Tobermory at 0900. She called at Mallaig to take on fuel between 1245 and 1340 then headed for Raasay which she reached in time to return to the Sconser service with the 1730 sailing from the island.
No sailings operated on Tuesday 1st January while on Wednesday 2nd she crossed from Raasay at 1000, returning from Sconser at 1030. She resumed the normal timetable on Thursday 3rd but only remained so employed for several days as LOCH STRIVEN returned on Saturday 5th. After serving on the route until the 1315 sailing from Sconser she left Raasay and sailed down to Kyle of Lochalsh for an overnight berth. On Sunday 6th she carried on to Mallaig.
In the circumstances it was decide to hold her there in case of further problems on LOCH STRIVEN and it was Thursday 10th before she left Mallaig, sailing as far as Craignure. Next day she carried on to Gigha to begin what had been planned as her first duty of 2008, that of relieving LOCH RANZA for overhaul. In the circumstances it had been decided not to delay this overhaul and it was actually LOCH TARBERT that she replaced at 1230. The usual Winter weather provided her with some problems and these began on Friday 18th when she was forced to miss the 1705 round trip to Tayinloan. On Thursday 24th she began with the 1030 ex Gigha and sailed as per roster until arriving at Tayinloan at 1250.She then made a round trip back to Gigha leaving Tayinloan at 1300 and returning at 1325 before sailing direct to her overnight berth for shelter. She was stormbound all day at Gigha on Friday 25th and missed the 0735 crossing on Saturday 26th.
She served Gigha until the end of sailings at 1420 on Saturday 27th then handed over to the newly returned LOCH RANZA before leaving Gigha at 1530 for Craighouse to spend the night. She left Jura at 0900 the next morning and sailed north to Tobermory which she reached at 1715. Next day, Tuesday 29th, she replaced RAASAY on the Kilchoan service for the Summer. However, to demonstrate Summer was along way away a gale on Thursday 31st kept her off service at Tobermory all day. More gales on Friday 1st February caused the cancellation of the 0720 sailing.
For the next few weeks her life was as planned unlike many of her fleet mates who fell victim to the conditions on frequent occasions. However, her luck ran out on Monday 25th when, in rapidly deteriorating conditions, she left Tobermory specially at 1230 to convey the schoolchildren home. On completion, she went off service, the 1545 sailing being cancelled. In severe conditions on Friday 29th she did manage to cross at 1545 but found it impossible to land at Kilchoan and thus had to bring her passengers back to Tobermory.
