ISLE OF LEWIS.
From Monday 4th September ISLE OF LEWIS operated the normal shoulder timetable of two round trips per day, Mondays to Saturdays, leaving Stornoway at 0715 and 1345 and returning from Ullapool at 1030 and 1745.
Heavy traffic in mid October delayed her on several occasions. On Wednesday 18th she did not get away from Ullapool on the morning run until 1105. As a result the afternoon sailing left Stornoway at 1445 and Ullapool at 1825. Next day her sailings from Stornoway were at 0750 and 1500 with returns from Ullapool at 1130 and 1820.
On Monday 23rd October she began operating the Winter schedule, unchanged from that of the previous year.
She finished the day 40 minutes late on Tuesday 24th and was completely stormbound at Stornoway on Thursday 26th because of a combination of wind and swell. A build up of traffic and bad weather delayed her next day and she sailed from Stornoway at 0735 and 1455, returning form Ullapool at 1130 and 1825. As a foretaste of what was to come she was stormbound again on Tuesday 31st because of a Force 9 North Westerly.
The weather conditions were no better in November and, on Friday 10th, she only managed one sailing, leaving from Stornoway at 1300 and returning from Ullapool at 1715. She was stormbound at Stornoway on Monday 20th and, one week later, missed the evening crossing from Ullapool. On Tuesday 28th she began at 1030 but ran late, the 1715 departure from Ullapool being delayed until 1800. More bad weather next day delayed her and she did not reach Stornoway until 1345. She was off again one hour later but remained at Ullapool overnight. On Thursday 30th, the conditions were much worse and she remained at Ullapool all day, picking up her roster from there next morning.
She was delayed on Saturday 2nd December with the 1030 from Ullapool not getting away until 1105. On Monday 4th storms prevented her from undertaking the morning sailing and it was 1345 before she stirred for the day. One week later the opposite happened and she managed the morning crossing only to miss the 1345 sailing. On Tuesday 12th she managed only one crossing of the Minch leaving Stornoway at 0725 and Ullapool at 1605. The storm continued into Wednesday 13th and she again was forced to cancel the afternoon sailing. As a result of the interruptions traffic built up and on Thursday 14th she sailed from Stornoway at 0715 and 1455 and Ullapool at 1110 and 1820.
She spent Christmas Day and Sunday 1st January alongside at Stornoway and operated her normal schedule on Tuesday 26th and Tuesday 2nd January.
The gales returned on Wednesday 3rd January and she lay in at Ullapool from 1000 until 1715 because of the conditions. Next day she did manage both sailings but a combination of traffic and weather delayed her and she was 45 minutes late by the end of the day.
After a brief interlude of peace and quite the storms returned with a vengeance mid month. On Tuesday 9th she was stormbound at Stornoway until 1345 when she was finally able to cross to Ullapool and back. She was stormbound again at Stornoway on Thursday 11th but, with a window in the weather promised for overnight, she loaded up traffic at Stornoway and got away at midnight, returning from Ullapool at 0300 on Friday 12th. She crossed from Stornoway again at 0725 but conditions rapidly worsened and she spent the rest of the day lying at Ullapool. She was able to leave at 0335 on Saturday 13th and picked up her normal schedule on arrival at Stornoway. Winds of 60 knots kept her at Ullapool on Monday 15th between 1000 and 1715 when she was finally able to return to Lewis. She was delayed in leaving Stornoway until 0825 next morning as she was held out of the linkspan by MUIRNEAG. However she caught up time during the day and finished twenty minutes behind schedule.
CLANSMAN arrived on Saturday 27th to relieve her and ISLE OF LEWIS left Stornoway the following day to undergo her annual overhaul at Birkenhead. At 0700 on Monday 29th she entered No. 4 drydock for work to begin. She left the dock at 1035 on Sunday 18th February and immediately headed for home, crossing the Mersey Bar at 1220. She arrived back at Stornoway at 0930 on Monday 19th and replaced CLANSMAN on her own service from 0715 next morning. |
